Thinking 2.0

  1. 1)Change happens, often whether we want it to or not. Therefore, learning how to manage change is better than failing to stop change.

  2. 2)A critical skill in managing change is the ability to measure the change. It is at the point of measuring the change that a choice is made whether to make a subjective measurement or an objective measurement.

  3. 3)The initial focus will be on the objective measurement as it is more reliable than a subjective measurement when both are possible. An objective measurement is typically made along the scale of a dimensional aspect of the change. For example, we measure the change in temperature with a thermometer that may have a Fahrenheit scale, Celsius scale, or Kelvin scale.

  4. 4)The vast majority of scales typically use Hindu-Arabic numerals. The need to understand numerals, or number sense, is a fundamental requirement to manage change.

What would happen to a society if a substantial number of its members lacked number sense?  How could these members differentiate between an objective measurement of reality and a subjective opinion? A measurement proffered by an authority, who indeed knew how to take an objective measurement, would only be accepted based on how much these members trusted that authority, as they lack the ability to validate the measurement themselves.
